Paleoanthropology

Help excavate a new locality at Zhoukoudian, the world-renowned site of Peking Man (Homo erectus pekinesis). Learn a multidisciplinary approach to excavation and recording techniques, including mapping, surveying, microscreening, and field photography. Attend classes on Chinese paleoanthropology, dating techniques, geology and paleontology, and other laboratory and field methods. Visit the Great Wall, the tomb of China's first emperor, and other palaces and temples in Beijing and Xian. Earn three or six credits at the graduate or undergraduate level.

The Paleoanthropological Field Program in China is the first program for American students at this early man site. Conducted in cooperation with the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology in Beijing, the program includes intensive field research in paleoanthropology, excavation methods, identification and analysis of materials, paleoecology, archaeology, and human anatomy. Students spend four weeks working at Zhoukoudian, then visit historical and archaeological sites in Beijing and Xian.

The estimated cost of the program is $4384, including three credits tuition, registration and program fees, five weeks of meals and lodging in China, all transportation and sightseeing fees within China, and taxes. A six-credit option is available for $5839. International airfare is not included.
