The purpose of the program is to examine international business development and tourism marketing in Cuba, a growing market facing unique challenges. Students will meet at GW for pre-departure lectures and readings on economic, political, and cultural issues in Cuba. Students will be involved in descriptive research projects involving field observations, questionnaire surveys, and personal interviews. This program is for graduate students and professionals; undergraduates admitted by permission of the instructors. Student may take either three or six credits.

Examine the investment conditions and opportunities for the tourism industry in Cuba focusing on the market competitiveness and potential of this country. Analyze regulatory and supporting policies and market characteristics. Observe business strategies of local and global firms as well as identify business opportunities. Visit with business owners and managers and with Cuban tourism and government officials and industry experts to gain insight on the current business climate.
TSTD 282.60 Strategic Tourism Marketing and Development in Cuba, Prof. Spivack, 3 credits
Discuss strategic alternatives for marketing and sustainable development in Cuba. Gain an understanding of current policy and management issues. Develop critical analysis skills for the assessment of tourism as a mechanism for development, and its effects on economic, physical, political, and socio-cultural environments. Differentiate the individual and integrative activities of marketing tourism in terms of sales, promotion and advertising, public relations, and distribution channels.
