FA 248 Individual Research in the Fine Arts
Students will develop their own special areas of interest in architecture, interior design, painting, book arts, textiles, and other decorative arts from the Arts and Crafts period, while examining the underlying social and political views that drove the artists of this movement. At each site students will not only tour the exhibits and tap the expertise of local British scholars, but will have time to sketch, research, and keep a journal of findings. A preliminary meeting the week before departure in Washington is recommended but not required for students not living in the Washington area. Students will be provided with a pre-flight reading list to help narrow a special research focus and to provide a broader view of the historical context. Afterwards, returning students will complete their research and present their findings in the form of either a research paper or a design project.
The two-week course is appropriate for graduate students in fine arts, art history, and interior design.
