EDUC. 205.60 International Experiences
The purpose of the course is for students to acquire knowledge of education, culture, history, and current reforms in Turkey through readings, lectures, and first-hand observations. The program will promote dialogue and ties between educators in Turkey and the United States through a week-long seminar arranged with Bogazici University in Istanbul. The seminar will include presentations by representatives of the Bogazici Faculty of Education, students, and GWU program participants. The opportunity to work in this environment will provide a rich basis for learning about the two countries and to explore Turkish culture and education through comparative study.

The class meets five times before departure, with lectures, discussions, and student presentations about Turkey, its education system, and contemporary issues. Students will visit one or more Turkish cultural sites in the Washington area, the embassy, a Turkish restaurant, and meet with the Turkish Student Association at GW and nearby universities.

Students taking the class for credit will prepare a draft paper to serve as a basis for discussion and research at Bogacizi University. The Bogazici seminar will be followed by visits to educational and cultural heritage sites throughout Turkey.

En route to Istanbul, the group will stop in Berlin to visit the Pergamon Museum and view the artifacts of ancient Turkish and Byzantine empires.

Students and faculty from GW's International Education Program travel abroad each summer to study educational systems and learn from local teachers, leaders, and policy makers. The intensive two-week seminar is designed for working professionals who are unable to participate in semester-long study abroad programs, but desire the rewarding opportunities of cross-cultural learning.
