Sustainable Tourism Development in Belize
May 24-June 2, 2002

Explore the sustainable tourism industry in Belize. Learn the history and development of tourism in Belize, and discover future opportunities and challenges for the industry there. For MBA and MTA students studying marketing, tourism, sport or event management, or environmental studies, students in international affairs or public management.



Program

The course is designed as a ten-day study tour of Belize to provide students with fundamental knowledge of the sustainable tourism industry, using Belize as a case study of how a country develops tourism as a primary industry. Specific attention will be made toward sports tourism, eco-tourism and cultural tourism. The history and development of tourism in Belize will be studies as well as prospects and obstacles for the future.

Prior to the tour, students will attend to lectures on-campus and complete reading assignments. Students will participate in a pre-departure field survey on the perception of Belize as a travel destination. During the tour, the program will be supplemented with lectures and group discussions with representatives from the local tourism industry.

Analyze strategies for development and marketing of sustainable tourism in Belize. Develop critical analysis skills for the assessment of tourism in Belize as a mechanism for development, and its effects on economic, physical, political, and socio-cultural environments.

Costs

Estimated costs are $3137 for tuition, housing, and in-country travel. Students are responsible for arranging their own airfare and meals.

Faculty

Lisa Delpy-Neirotti has been a professor of Sport Management and Tourism Studies at The George Washington University for eleven years. Dr. Delpy-Neirotti serves on the editorial board of Sport Marketing Quarterly and SportsTravel magazine and is a member of the Women Sport Foundation (WSF) advisory board. Prior to arriving at The George Washington University, Dr. Delpy-Neirotti traveled to 56 countries around the world studying the development and organization of the Olympic Movement. Capitalizing on her international interest and contacts, she has organized and led student study tours to the Olympic Games since 1992, as well as the 1993 World University Games, and the 1994 Goodwill Games.
