Sustainable Tourism Practicum in Dominica
May 22-July 3, 2002 (Travel June 1-15)

Form a consulting team to assist with the identification and evaluation of ecotourism opportunities and constraints in Dominica. Use cross-functional management consulting and collaborative planning techniques to formulate organizational, competitive and sustainable tourism development strategies for the North Coast and proposed Woodford Hill Resort using ecotourism principles and practices. For graduate MBA and MTA students.



Program

Students enroll in two courses, TSTD 282: International Experiences (3 credits) and MBAD 295: Consulting Practicum (3 credits). Students will attend weekly seminars during the first summer session from May 22 to June 26, 2002. The travel component is planned for June 1-15, 2002.

Dominica has been designated as a "nature" island and has given priority to developing ecotourism products for the North American and European markets. Professor Donald Hawkins will help students will assess the potential for sustainable tourism on the North Coast of Dominica, and recommend development strategies for the region. Students will work with sponsors Analytica International LLC and Nature Island Development, Ltd. to review the overall approach to the development and implementation of a tourism development strategy for the North Coast. Upon leaving Dominica the student team will have formulated an operational model that can be tested and replicated in other rural communities in the host country.

Costs

The cost of the program in estimated at $3833 for six credits graduate tuition and the registration fee. Analytica International will provide accommodations and some meals. International airfare and insurance are the responsibility of the students.

Professor Donald E. Hawkins, Dwight D. Eisenhower Professor of Tourism Policy; Professor of Tourism Studies and Research Professor of Medicine. B.A., Kings College, Pennsylvania; M.A., Lehigh University; Ed.D., New York University.

Dr. Hawkins is the founder of the Tourism Studies Program at The George Washington University. Dr. Hawkins is the author or editor of more than 95 articles including: Tourism in Contemporary Society, Ecotourism Planning and Management, and Turismo Venezuela. He is also the founding Editor of the Journal of Leisure Research, serves on the editorial boards for the Journal of Travel Research and Tourism Management, and is a joint Editor-in-Chief of the World Travel and Tourism Review. Dr. Hawkins is internationally recognized for his leadership role and research in tourism development, particularly in recent years in Egypt, Jamaica, Venezuela, Argentina, Bermuda and Panama. Dr. Hawkins research interests include ecotourism development; tourism policy analysis and strategic planning; post-secondary hospitality and tourism education; destination competitiveness; integrative tourism marketing, economic development and foreign investment promotion; and event management.
