Culture and Language in North Africa
June 1-July 26, 2002

Study Moroccan history, Arabic, and other academic offerings in combination with study tours of the region. Observe Moroccan culture and heritage through visits to Rabat, Fez, and Casablanca. Courses other than Arabic language are taught in English. For undergraduate students.



Program

The George Washington University summer abroad program in Ifrane, Morocco allows students to explore North Africa's culture and language while earning credit toward an undergraduate degree. Students choose one of the following tracks for study (see "Courses" for descriptions):

Track A
Intensive Arabic and Moroccoan colloquial Arabic. Weekend field trips included. 6 - 8 credits.

Track B
Two North African studies courses (Popular Cultures in North Africa, Contemporary Moroccan History, History of the Arab World, Moorish/Moroccan Art and Architecture, Contemporary North African Cultures) and Moroccan colloquial Arabic.  6 credits.

Track C
HMN 701, one advanced North African studies course (Popular Cultures in North Africa, Contemporary Moroccan History, History of the Arab World, Moorish/Moroccan Art and Architecture), and Moroccan colloquial Arabic. Extensive weekend travel included. 6 credits.

Track D
Intensive Arabic and one advanced North African studies course (Popular Cultures in North Africa, Contemporary Moroccan History, History of the Arab World, Moorish/Moroccan Art and Architecture)Weekend travel included.
9-11 credits.

Track E
Intensive intermediate or advanced arabic and HMN 701.60. Extensive weekend travel included. 9 credits.



Courses

Intensive Arabic Includes field trips and three overnight weekend trips.

Beginner Arabic = ARAB 1 & 2 First Year Arabic (8 credits).

Intermediate Arabic = partial credit ARAB 3 & 4 Second-Year Arabic (6 credits).

Advanced = ARAB 9 & 10 Third-Year Arabic (6 credits)

History of the Arab World (3 credits) = GW HIST 194

Contemporary Moroccan History (3 credits)

Popular Cultures in North Africa (3 credits)

Contemporary North African Cultures (3 credits) - Long weekend trips and optional side trips are included = GW HMN 701

Moorish and Moroccan Art and Architecture

Colloquial Arabic (non-credit) Designed for non-native speakers of Arabic. Introduces students to necessary structures for everyday interactions with native speakers



Location

The program is located at Al-Akhawayn University in Ifrane (AUI), Morocco, a community in the Middle Atlas Mountains, an area known for its dense forests, watersprings, and lakes. The university was established in 1995 by the late King Hassan of Morocco and King Fahd of Saudi Arabia.



Costs

The following costs include tuition, fees, room & board, insurance, activities, airport pick-ups in Morocco, and in-country field trip costs


  • Track A -- $3500.00
  • Track B -- $4980.00
  • Track C -- $5780.00
  • Track D -- $5480.00

International airfare is not included in the cost of the program.

Scholarships are available for those GW students with a demonstrated interest in Arabic and Middle Eastern studies, as well as those students who seek an international experience but have not yet had the opportunity or resources to study abroad. Scholarship applications are due Thursday, March 14, 2002.
