Participation in the cultural life of Madrid is an integral part of the study abroad experience. Students are encouraged to explore Madrid to discover the wide variety of entertainment and cultural possibilities such as attending Sunday morning concerts at the Audencia Nacional de Musica, walking through the Rastro, going to concerts by local folk singers, or viewing the paintings at the Prado. A series of tours and excursions are scheduled for students, including visits to the Senate, Banco de Espana, and museums. GW will also sponsor two weekend trips during the semester. Housing is arranged in Spanish homes. The GW Madrid Study Center staff places students according to the information provided on a housing preference form. Many study abroad students consider a homestay opportunity the best way to learn the language and the culture of the people. Life with a family can range from a boarding-type experience to that of being accepted as a member of the family. The GW resident director in Madrid assists students with housing questions, orientation issues, and academic advising. The director also oversees the internship program. Spain
